The history of English literature is a very hard subject. But if you read it carefully, you can easily hold it in your mind. Here we have tried to provide the best way of memorizing easily.
The periods of English Literature
In The History of English Literature, there were different phases and progress; and these phases are known as age or period. Some of these periods are subdivided into smaller ages. A list of periods or ages and their time-span (সময়কাল) are given
below.
The Old English Period
The old English period is also known as Anglo-Saxon
Period. The time span of this period is 450-1066. In the 5th
century, the Angles and Saxons came to England from Germany and defeated (পরাজিত করেছিলো) the English tribes. This period ended in 1066
with the Norman conquest. In this period,
ii) The Middle English Period: The time span of this period is 1066-1500. In 1066, this period started with the Norman conquest (বিজয়) and ended at the close of the fifteenth century. This period is subdivided into two small periods- Anglo-Norman Period and The ages of Chaucer. The early part of the Middle Age is called the Dark Ages because what actually happened during that time can hardly be known.
iii) The Renaissance Period: The effect of The Renaissance Period on English life and literature is felt after 1500. Actually, this period started in 1453 and ended in 1660. But it is accepted that the time-span of this period is 1500 to 1660. This period of 160 years is subdivided into four shorter ages:
a) Elizabethan Age (1558-1603)
b) Jacobean Age (1603-1625)
c) Caroline Age (1625-1649)
d) Commonwealth Period (1649-1660)
iv) The Neoclassical Period: This period is also called the 'pseudo-classical Age' for the artificiality of the writers. The writers imitated (অনুকরণ করা) the ancient Greek and Roman literary tradition. This period started in 1660 and ended up in 1785. This period comprises (গঠিত) three shortage ages:
a) The Restoration Period (1660-1700)
b) The Augustan Age (1702-1745)
c) The Age of Sensibility (1745-1785)
